With today being Ash Wednesday, i thought I’d share this piece I made last year. It includes references to our dog, Pow, our beloved companion who had died one year earlier from kidney disease (which kept him from eating), a dead swan from a Frans Snyders painting (a feast food in 17th Flanders), an orant figure with a face jug head (a pudgy-faced preacher face jug, to be precise), three figures from Bruegel’s Battle Between Carnival and Lent (one of them a silhouette of ashes), and two stuffed animals, a boor and a pheasant, references to Snyders and Bruegel, respectively.
